Introduction to Codes, Part 1: BLS and PALS Review, TEAM videos

pediatric emergency sign

 Video 1: BLS review

Link 1: PALS algorithms

Video 2: PALS Resuscitation TEAM Part 1

Video 3: PALS Resuscitation TEAM Part 2

What it is: Three video clips created by the American Heart Association – the first reviews BLS, the next 2 show code scenarios run in 2 different manners. Also, a link with the PALS algorithms.

Ideal Audience: All residents – in particular interns and residents about to head to the PICU

Why it is great: It is helpful to visualize what a code actually looks like prior to having to run one. Also great to see how roles make a difference, communication techniques, etc.

How to access it: Click above links. Or, go to YouTube and search by names as noted above.

How much time to budget for this: Videos are about 20 min, 6 min, and 7 min.

Other thoughts/comments/advice: Have your PALS cards out in front of you as you review these clips. Become familiar with the various algorithms. Review how to call a rapid response and how to call a code within the UMass hospital. May be fun to review the second and third videos with another resident so you can chat about how the 2 videos compare.
